Background

Hank Helstrom is the iconic, notorious and controversial lead singer of the "Hellstorm" heavy/black metal band. The media rumour mill has called him everything from a 'heathen' to 'satanic' Minnesotan who is reported to have drunk sheep's blood to mimic the norse Blót, performed elaborate and obscene rituals in the woods late at night and to have combined drugs and poisonous mushrooms to enter a state of "battle rage" before a show (and soon after, the hospital). Whatever the truth of these reports, in the years before the Alien War he was a well-known heavy metal vocalist, particularly famous for his ability to intimidate and antagonize his detractors and sing some good mean, heavy metal.

Recently, however, Hank has devoted himself fully to combating the alien menace. Ever since his band's mysterious disappearance while passing through Kansas on a tour last year, the singer has been up in proverbial, and literal, arms. Reports of UFO sightings in the area at the time his band went missing lead him (and many of the band's fans) to conclude that "Hellstorm" must regrettably have joined the ranks of those kidnapped by the alien menace. Spared the fate of disappearing with his band due to having been hospitalized with a throat infection, Hank vowed to discover the fate of his band and, by extension, whatever the hell the aliens' goals are on Earth.

He began studying and collecting every scrap of information on the Alien War that he could lay his hands on, and eventually attempted to join X-Com's military efforts. Initially judged to be too inexperienced and physically ill-fit to join a combat team, he persisted (and insisted) long enough for his recruiting officer to do an about-turn when it was discovered that the sickly singer had a natural aptitude for psionics. Used more as a freebie test subject than anything else, Hank was one of the first people given the PET, and one of the more strangely affected.

When Hank came to from his arduous training he found that he had the ability to make himself, or others, understand any language, including that of the aliens. X-Com almost didn't get to utilize this skill, however, as the research facility Hank was at came under attack from a task force lead by what is suspected to have been an Ethereal Khan or Sub-Khan. The assault force was fought off at great cost, but most of the scientists belonging to facility survived, in no small part thanks to Hank, who discovered and distracted the ethereal leading the force, fortuitously resisting several attempts at mind control. This, combined with Hank's ability to toss threats, curses and insults at it in its own language, shook the confidence of the ethereal and it retreated by UFO before more damage could be done.

Pictures of Hank has later shown up in snippets of data from captured and salvaged alien computers. It's suspected the ethereal has placed a high bounty on the head of the psionic human who managed to embarrass it.
